Default Best approach questions

I've set up my store almost the way I like it, but don't know if I'm handling a few things in the most efficient way or perhaps I have a feature I'd like to request.

Store ID: 31192
Store URL: http://www.drshoemom.com/shoestore/

My current menu looks like this -

GIRLS
Toddler (1-5 years)
-Boots
-Casual
-Dressy
-First Walker
-Sandals/Flip-Flops
-Sneakers
Youth (5 Years+)
-Boots
-Casual
-Dressy
-First Walker
-Sandals/Flip-Flops
-Sneakers
Boots
Casual
Dressy
Sandals/Flip-Flops
Sneakers
BOYS
....etc
Now the 2nd level category for "Girls->Boots" lets say, instead of manually filling that category with products ideally would just combine all the products of the Girls->Youth->Boots category + the Girls->Toddler->Boots category. I was able to do this with your help by creating a custom view/product module with custom query c=XXXXX,XXXXX and assigning it to that category.

That's great and works okay but there are a couple issues.
  • It creates a ton of misc custom views in my category views that at some point may be hard to keep track of.
  • I've built in sorting options on the Default Category View. Every time I change something on the sorting I have to manual update a ton of custom views for each of the custom "c=XXXXX,XXXXX" product modules/views.
  • The Top level GIRLS category (which is empty but I've set to populate with all the shoes in it's sub-categories), gets populated by a lot of duplicate shoes.

Any thoughts on tackling any of these issues? They all seem kind of related, perhaps my approach isn't the way I should be doing this, or, maybe my feature request would be to instead of adding the c=XXXXX,XXXXX logic to a custom product module, I'd love to be able to set that for a category in Category Properties (if that makes sense). I'm guessing that's not the way the system works though.

Thanks for your help!

Hi

I think you are trying to solve the problem the wrong way. I also think it's confusing for your site's visitors. Now they have to decide where to go Girls > Boots or Girls > Toddler > Boots or Girls > Youth > Boots.

Why not eliminate the Girls > Boots category altogether? That makes the most sense.

If you do want to keep the categories you have, I think the best way is not to use custom views and just create search subscriptions for each of your categories.

Thanks Eric, one follow up questions. Is it possible to assign subscriptions or products to more than one category? I know this is of course possible by going to each category and assigning whatever products I want to the category.

However, is it possible to setup a subscription, and then assign it to multiple categories so I only have to create the subscription once and when I make changes to it, it gets updated across the categories I've assigned it to?

Hi

No, this is not possible but you can just duplicate a subscription using the "copy" link and then move the newly created subscription to a different category.
