Default Canonical Issues

(oops. I accidentally posted to V1 troubleshooting)

I just found that my domain has canonical issues. I know at one time we had a 404 redirect to www, but I think since the update, it is now not doing this. Again, I think due to the update to V3 but not sure.

So, for example

http://www.forbabygifts.com/
http://forbabygifts.com/

Can you give some tips on where to start solving this? It is a datafeedr setting, thesis, or a htaccess?

Thank you!

This is not a Datafeedr issue. I would check you Settings > General page to make sure you have entered the correct URL there.

Also check your theme settings and any SEO plugin you might be using.

What is weird is that it is only happening with the datafeedr pages. Not WP blog pages. I only have Redirection, Google Analytics, and Spam-Free, Open Hook, Widget Context and Datafeedr as plugins. I deactivated as many as I could, but still no juice.

I added the .htaccess redirect code for apache but only my homepage redirects.

I checked thesis theme, but I can find nothing there. I am talking hostgator now.

What version of Datafeedr are you using?

Hmm... strange. Have you tried implementing any plugin or htaccess edit that would redirect all "www" domains to "non-www" (or vice versa depending on what you want to do)?

The only one that may be causing the problem is Redirection. But when I deactivate, the same thing occurs.

And my .htaccess reads as follows:

# BEGIN WordPress
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^index\.php$ - [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /index.php [L]
</IfModule>

# END WordPress

#
Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine On
#
# REDIRECT to canonical url
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^forbabygifts\.com [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.forbabygifts.com/$1 [R=301,L]
#

I am assuming the first one takes care of wordpress, and the other should take care of the DRF pages. But only my homepage will redirect. I even have hostgater stumped.

Are you trying to redirect all pages to www or without www?

Maybe this will work

Code:
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www\.forbabygifts\.com [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.forbabygifts.com/$1 [R=301,L]

Do you think this may be caused because I am not using the most current version of WP?

Probably not. Did you try the code I provided above?

It does not appear to be causing ranking problems. Google is not showing dup content, so I guess I should let it go for now. Thanks for your help, Eric.

Solution:

I needed to put the apache rewrite code before the WP rewrite code. (if that makes any sense )

It is working now, but not sure why. So, keeping my fingers crossed for good results.

Again, thank you for helping out, Eric! You did not have to yet you tried.

Thanks for the tip Cashnow - I was also experiencing this canonical issue on my Datafeedr pages.

This was a fresh WP 3.1 install using DF v3.02.3038 with no additional plugins.

I selected to use the www version of my website in both the WP site and address URL settings (Settings/General in WP dashboard menu).

This should make all WP pages redirect to your chosen version of the site i.e. either all with-www prefixed or non-www prefixed URLs.

However, after activiating the DF plugin, although all other normal pages of my site such as domain.com/terms still redirected through to their with-www equivalents, all DF category and product pages were ignoring this rule and the non-www URLs of these pages could still be accessed without the 301 redirect kicking in - as it should by default.

My store was set as my homepage and that was also not obeying the non-www redirect as determined in WP General address (URL) settings - which could be a SEO issue as Web users link to sites using www and non-www versions of URLs.

I have manually amended my htaccess to ensure this redirect is enforced across the site.

However, it isn't ideal to have to do this on every new site build.

Eric - could the DF plugin be tweaked so it doesn't overwrite this WP rule and allows the DF page URLs to be treated as normal WP pages are - as specified in the WP General Settings option?

Please move this post to feature requests if required - btw I love the new URL structure options now available in the V3 Factory URL Settings menu.

This has been fixed in Version 3.1 and is now available.
