Default Custom views for datafeedr categories

Is it possible to assign a unique view to each category I create in datafeedr?

I have created the view but assigning it to a category I can not so far work out.

The reason why I would like this is that ideally I would like descriptions on each page (I was doing it via category properties > descriptions however I would also like a catchy meta description to help me stand out on the page, one that is different to the text displayed on the page.

Is this possible or am I just making more work for myself?

Hi

Yes, creating a custom view for each category page is possible but a lot of work just to change the meta descriptions...

I would probably opt for doing a large if : else statement in the <head> area. This will prevent you from having to create a new view for each category and you will be able to control the meta info all in one place.

So go here: The Factory > Your Store > VIEWS > CATEGORY PAGE > Default > View menu > View < head> Elements.

In the textarea for the <head> elements, add code like this:

PHP Code:
<?php if ($category->id == 123456) : ?>
    <meta name="description" content="Description for category 123456" />
<?php elseif ($category->id == 24680) : ?>
    <meta name="description" content="Description for category 24680" />
<?php elseif ($category->id == 13579) : ?>
    <meta name="description" content="Description for category 13579" />
<?php elseif ($category->id == 148259) : ?>
    <meta name="description" content="Description for category 148259" />
<?php elseif ($category->id == 98765) : ?>
    <meta name="description" content="Description for category 98765" />
<?php elseif ($category->id == 86543) : ?>
    <meta name="description" content="Description for category 86543" />
<?php elseif ($category->id == 876555) : ?>
    <meta name="description" content="Description for category 876555" />
<?php endif; ?>
You'll just need to get the category ID. You can get the category ID when you click on a category in the factory and then look for this in the URL:

In this example, 545518 is the category ID.

Sounds just the ticket.

I am trying this on one site to see the work load involved.

I presume I can put the meta description in the category as per normal and the above description content fills out the text below the page title header text on the page itself.

I would like meta descriptions and then Page text.

ie.

Category Lawn mowers
Meta description to catch peoples attention in searches: Get your lawn mowers best price

At then the page will be

Lawn mowers
If you are looking for a lawn mower......please take a look at our selection.

I would like the meta description to be different to the page text for each category, if possible.

Sorry if I am not making sense it's late here and I've been working with keywords for hours!

Hi

The info on your page will be completely different than what is in your meta tags... I think that's what you want.

Stuff that should be visible on the page, put here: Category Properties > Category description

Stuff that should go in your Meta Description, goes in the code I provided above.

Then those 2 pieces of text will be completely different.

Here's an example of what the code I pasted might look like:

PHP Code:
<?php if ($category->id == 123456) : ?>
    <meta name="description" content="Best rock climbing shoes for men and women" />
<?php elseif ($category->id == 24680) : ?>
    <meta name="description" content="Cheap rock climbing ropes for all kinds of climbing" />
<?php elseif ($category->id == 13579) : ?>
    <meta name="description" content="Rock Climbing harnesses for men and women." />
<?php elseif ($category->id == 148259) : ?>
    <meta name="description" content="Flexible climbing clothes for men and women. Great for bouldering, sport climbing or big wall climbing." />
<?php elseif ($category->id == 98765) : ?>
    <meta name="description" content="Climbing hardware and great prices" />
<?php elseif ($category->id == 86543) : ?>
    <meta name="description" content="Rock climbing helmets.  Great prices." />
<?php endif; ?>
Note all of the meta descriptions for each category.

Then just use Category Properties > Category Description for what will appear on your page.
