Default if ($merchant_id = 'xxxxx') then...

I would like to style the product image from a specific merchant (on the product detail page) differently than the product images from other merchants. How can I do this (give it a different class name)? I tried this:

<?php if ($merchant_id = '9383' ) { ?>
<img class="hot-topic" src="[product.image direct='1' tag='0']" alt="[]" />
<?php } else { ?>
[product.image direct='1' tag='1']
<?php } ?>

...and a million variations of that. Nothing works. I've also tried this:
<?php if ([product.merchant_id] = '9383' ) { ?> to no avail.

...and this
<?php if ([product.merchant] = 'Hot Topic' ) { ?>

still no go. Please help!

Got it! It was this:

<?php if ($product->merchant_id == 9383) { ?>
