Default rel canonical categories

Eric,

Now I have added unique articles to the category pages for my categories, I am in danger of having duplicate content over paginated pages. What would be the easiest way to rel canonical all the pages of a product category back to page one? I only want the first page of a category indexed anyway.

Thanks

Hi

Add this to your Category's view > view properties > <head> elements

HTML Code:
[store.if page="off"]<link rel="canonical" href="[server.url type='fullpage']" />[/store.if]

Hmmm..that's not working.

I want to add it to the head of the view so that even when someone filters by price it still only has the original category url. [server.url type='fullpage'] just inputs the url in the address bar which is what I don't want.

Hi Eric,

I don't think your code above works as intended...

I use:
Code:
<link rel="canonical" href="http://www.mydomain.com[category.link]" />
And this gives me canonical links which point back to the main category page on each page 2 - #

This ensures it's your main category page that gets the link juice and gets indexed...

With your code I think you will get canonical links that point to the page itself...

You will see
Code:
<link rel="canonical" href="http://www.mydomain.com/store/category/mycategory/2/" />
etc...

Which is not what you want...

You also want to restrict any articles/text you have on your category pages to only be shown on the first page...

Eg:
Code:
<?php if (!empty($category->description)){ ?>
[store.if page="off"]
<h2>[category.name]</h2>
<p>[category.description]</p>
[/store.if]
<?php } ?>
Just my two cents...

@ ayorofrance

I agree with you. But take a look at this:

http://www.webmasterworld.com/google/4467519.htm

And then the Video

Seems like the best way to handle is via rel prev next but it is not yet available in DFR.

Thanks for the tip!

After watching that video again, I am not sure rel=can a paginated series to the first page is a good idea. It seems like Google is saying only use it if the pages have the same content.

Yeah, a bit unclear on what's the best approach...
