Default Longer category descriptions?

Hi Eric,

I gather the category description in v3 is meant for the meta data...

Is there an easy way to add a more lengthy category description to be shown on the category list page?

Or would I have to create a custom view for each category and add a text module?

Thanks...

  1. You could create a custom category view for each module (less than ideal).
  2. You could input a long description into the description field and truncate the description using php when it gets inserted into your meta description tag.
  3. You could add a text module to your category page and input a big conditional like this:

    PHP Code:
    <?php if ($category->slug=='coffee-machines') { ?>

    Here is my awesome, long description about coffee machines...

    <?php } elseif ($category->slug=='blenders')  { ?>

    Here is my awesome, long description about blenders.  I'm such a good writer!

    <?php } else { ?>

    [category.description]

    <?php ?>
  4. You could also add a function like this to your theme's functions.php file ...
    PHP Code:
    function dfr_get_long_category_descriptions($cid) {

    $descriptions = array(

    517928    => "Here is my awesome, long description about coffee machines...",

    517931    => "Here is my awesome, long description about blenders.  I'm such a good writer!",
        );
        if (
    array_key_exists($cid$descriptions))
            return
    $descriptions[$cid];
        return
    '';

    ... and then add the following code to a Text module on your Category page ...
    PHP Code:
    <?php echo dfr_get_long_category_descriptions($category->id); ?>
    ... and that will work, too.

I would prefer the last 2 methods myself.

Hi Eric,

Thanks for your suggestions...

Would it be terribly difficult to add a [category.full_description] field, which would take html?

If you have a category in a shop that you want to rank for it is extremely important to be able to add content on the page... and it seems like everything is in place in the infrastructure... just need the field really...

Sorry, this thread should probably now live in Feature Requests ;-)

Hi Eric,

Would it be possible for you to give an indication if an added field is a possibility in the near future?

I'd prefer not to implement 3 or 4, but will have to in case that is the only option for now...

Thanks :-)

Hi

I'm sorry but it's impossible to give any indication at this time. Our current priorities are such:

1. Fix critical bugs
2. Fix non-critical bugs
3. Address usability issues
4. Add V1 features that do not yet exist in V3.
5. Prioritize new features
6. Implement new features in order.

We are still in phase 1 of this BETA roll out. We are still finding and squashing critical bugs related to different server configurations and environments.

I wish I could give you a timeframe but that's just not possible at this time.

No problem - I am conscious that this is a very busy time for you...

I've opted for number 3.

Although it is not ideal it is absolutely workable... thanks for the solution!
