Random Products | Not Random

Hi Eric,

The random products on the home page don't seem to be throwing up random products?

Also the size of some of the images are massive http://demo.rideonsurfshop.co.uk/one...10200089717772

Which view in the Factory is responsible for displaying those products?

I've addressed the massive images here: /show...8525#post38525

However, those images on that page are between 20Kb ~ 70kb each, a fraction of the size of your background image which is about 380Kb.

I'm really not sure, its confusing when i look at the views. Because all have buttons in the code, but the random products via the home page dont have buttons?

If you look on the live site http://www.rideonsurfshop.co.uk/surf-shop this page is where all the random products are drawn from.

However, the random products arent drawn from here http://demo.rideonsurfshop.co.uk/surf-shop

So where are they coming from?

Eric January 4th, 2013 09:29 AM

Hi,

Well, your Store's Front Page view's Product list module is set to sort by clickthroughs, not randomly.

Eric

is that the issue?

Yes, I believe it is.

I have changed all the settings in the view.

Here's my products which i want to appear in the random products view

http://demo.rideonsurfshop.co.uk/surf-shop

I have added the custom string in the view, but i still don't know where the products are coming from which are now appearing appearing in my random widgets?

I'm lost :)

They are coming from this category: http://factory3.datafeedr.com/feeder...ry?cat=1048918 because you have chosen to use a custom query string.

If you want the products to be pulled from all categories in your store, then check the "Use request url" option.

macfink January 4th, 2013 04:06 PM

yes thats correct http://factory3.datafeedr.com/feeder...ry?cat=1048918

However, the products in that category don't relate to whats being displayed in the random products widget?

Eric January 4th, 2013 04:50 PM

Are you referring to the widget in the sidebar or the products in the main area of the page? From your first post, my impression was you were referring to the main area of the page.

macfink January 6th, 2013 05:42 AM

both they should be showing products from this view http://factory3.datafeedr.com/feeder...ry?cat=1048918

Eric January 6th, 2013 09:01 AM

Hi,

Then you need to configure the Products widget responsible for displaying random widgets the same way you have your Store's Front Page > Product list module configured. Just use the exact same settings but change the Products per page field to 3.

I have configured the widget for the corresponding view

All products should be generated from this category which is here http://demo.rideonsurfshop.co.uk/surf-shop

Which is from this hidden category http://factory3.datafeedr.com/feeder...ry?cat=1048918

I then select 'products' in the widget via wp

Still its showing product which arent in the above. What am i doing wrong? :)

Eric January 7th, 2013 12:26 PM

You need to check the 'use custom query' checkbox.

macfink January 8th, 2013 06:45 AM

Bit the custom string is relating to cat=1048918, which is the products i want to show?

Exactly, that's why you must check the 'Use custom query' checkbox.
