URL Changing Question

Hi Eric and Stefan,

On this page http://www.datafeedr.com/docs/item/166, number 6, you write unless great care is taken, your URLs will be changed. Can you explain how to take great care?

Thanks!

Eric January 10th, 2011 09:35 AM

Please tell me what your current URL structure is and I can set that up for you. I need to know the URLs to the following pages of your current V1 store:

store's front page
1 category page
1 product details page
search page

Eric,

This is my site.

store's front page: http://www.forbabygifts.com/
Category: http://www.forbabygifts.com/store/ca...nalized-gifts/
Product Details Page: http://www.forbabygifts.com/store/pr...27303-3346-ls/

We have created some datafeedr page. Will you need those? For instance, http://www.forbabygifts.com/store/pe...ed-baby-gifts/.

Thank you!

Hi

Here are the settings that would replicate your V1 store's URLs:

A couple things to note:
  • Custom pages will not be copied over from V1 to V3. You'll need to recreate those using Custom Views.
  • Any indexed searches in the search engines will be redirected to/store/search/?word=query
  • Make sure to take a look at the "Before you Upgrade" page.

Thank you, Eric! We will look this over and ask additional questions when needed.

Eric, you are saying that the datafeedr pages will not copy from V1 to V3? This page was created using datafeedr pages. Will this page copy over?

Are datafeedr pages custom pages? Or do you mean, any DF page that is not a default page will not copy over? If so, where do I find Custom View?

Eric January 10th, 2011 10:45 AM

Hi

If, in the Version 1 plugin, you went to Datafeedr > Pages > Add New Page and created a new store page for your Version 1 store, that page you created will not be transferred to your Version 3 store. This is because there is no way for the Factory to "know" about that custom page that you created from your blog's admin area.

So, let's say you want to re-create that "Baby Baptism Gifts" custom page in Version 3. Here's how you would do that:
  1. Log into the Factory
  2. Go to VIEWS > Custom Views > Add a new view
  3. Name the new view "Baby Baptism Gifts".
  4. Add the content you want to display to the view.
  5. Update your store.
Now, when you go to http://www.forbabygifts.com/store/baby-baptism-gifts/, you will see the new content you created in that view.

Okay, thank you Eric!

We will read through everything before attempting to launch. We are going to try it out on our test site first. Get the kinks worked out.

Great idea!

It helps :)

So no recently viewed products/items in V3? If not, I would like to ask the DF members if they know of one. What section is best to post this question?

Eric January 10th, 2011 01:16 PM

Hi

What do you mean 'recently viewed'? That functionality didn't exist in V1 either? If you want to request that feature, you can do so here: /forumdisplay.php?f=69

I mean that when someone clicks several products, their recently viewed lists would show on a product page. It is common on e-commerce sites like amazon or gifts.com.

It looks like "may we also suggest" that is on the page now, only the last products the user clicked are used.

If this feature was available in V1, then I completely missed it.

Eric January 10th, 2011 05:42 PM

Hi

The recently viewed items was not and still is not a feature. If you want us to consider that feature, please post it in the Features Request forum.

Thanks,
Eric

Request made. Is there a place where I can ask the DF forum users? I thought maybe one of the store owners had this feature on their site.

You could try asking the the Datafeedr Discussion forum: /forumdisplay.php?f=4

Thanks for all your help, Eric. Placed suggestion and question in places you suggested. See if I get any takers :D

Hi Eric,

Have a few more questions:

1) I watched the upgrade video. It sounded like even if we keep our old URLs, new ones are going to be added. Is that true? It seems like the only choice is doing the 301s. Stefan said that it should not change your ranking, but changing over 3000 URLs is a lot of change for Google.

2) Above you created our settings? What is that going to do for us exactly?

3) I could live with the product URL change (although they are just begin to rank in Google), but will our category page URLs change? Can you look at our category page and let me know?

What I am really asking is this: Is there a way to keep our old URLs with V3 and not create duplicate content?

Once again, thanks for your help!

The screenshot I provided above will do this for you. There will not be dup content and your URLs will be the same as you had in V1.

Okay, that's a relief. :o.

(Really got to say your customer service is excellent! If you need some customer reviews, let me know.)
