how do i make the category and product detail pages use a particular page template
ok i see that my theme has a left-hand column with widget support. how do i make the category page and product detail pages use that particular page template from the theme? (sorry, another newbie question)

You can choose the template from this page: WordPress Admin Area > Pages > Store > Edit.
